Prayer Flag
This work was inspired by my Ph.D thesis, where, for my field work, I visited ecovillage communities around Australia. In my research, I aimed to find out what, if anything, art does to orient the members of these communities towards desiring a sustainable lifestyle. This work, ‘Prayer Flag’, responds to some (not all) of the repeating characteristics that I observed in the art and decorative devices in these communities.
Firstly,I observed that there were a lot of flags displayed around the ecovillage properties. In particular prayer flags that indicated the desire for a deeper spiritual connection to the earth. Another characteristic is the use of geometry in the art, dwellings and landscape, for example the spiral as seen in this work. Thirdly the use of colour. In the past, my work was predominantly used natural notes, however, after my ecovillage experience I am employing more colour in my works.
